Conditions for taking up gainful employment in Switzerland if you are a national of one of the EU 15 or of an EFTA country

One of the agreements adopted between Switzerland and the EU 15 is the agreement on the free movement of persons. It concerns salaried workers, the self-employed, service providers, recipients of services and people who are not part of the active population (retired people, students, etc.).

If you want to work in Switzerland, you can come here and look for work for a maximum of six months. As soon as you have an employment contract or a statement from an employer saying that you have been hired or if you can prove that you are self-employed, you can obtain a residence permit. This will be issued for the duration of your employment contract. If your contract is valid for twelve months or more, the permit may be renewed. If the length of your contract is for a period of four months or less, your residence permit may be renewed for up to one year.

If you are self-employed, you do not need a residence permit as long as the services you are providing take up to 90 days but you should notify the cantonal authorities of the place where you are providing your services. If the services take longer than 90 days, you will be issued with a residence permit for the duration of the services you are providing. For further information
